What is API Integration?

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a way for software applications to communicate with each other. API integration is the process of connecting different software tools through their APIs so they can share data and trigger actions automatically. It's the technical foundation that makes business automation possible.

How it relates to business automation

Every automation, whether through Zapier, Make, or custom code, relies on APIs to connect tools. Understanding API integration helps you evaluate what's possible: which tools can connect, what data can flow between them, and where the limitations are. Some automations that seem simple are complex because of API constraints, and vice versa.

When you might use it

You're working with API integration whenever you connect business tools. No-code platforms like Zapier abstract the complexity, but the APIs are still doing the work. Direct API integration (writing code to call APIs) becomes necessary when you need capabilities that no-code tools don't support, when you need better performance, or when you're building custom applications.

How OpsWork can help

We handle API integration at whatever level your business needs. Sometimes that's configuring no-code tools effectively. Sometimes it's building custom integrations that do exactly what you need. We understand both the business requirements and the technical constraints, so we can recommend the right approach for each situation.
